At the end of the day ...

Sometimes, it seems like at the end of the day, we've really accomplished nothing at all, and sometimes it feels like we blinked and it sped past.  Sometimes it feels like we've been running in circles, or even, rarely, like we actually managed to accomplish our goals.

I'm trying to be good about blogging, and while I wanted to try and do 'fashion' blogging, I'm not sure if I'm good at that.  Today's shot isn't at all a fashion or a story type picture.  Its just sort of an end of the day picture, even if for me its still morning.  Today has been a little frustrating for me so far, and I -feel- like its the end of a day, even if its not.  I was working on stuff for events I'm in for next month, and trying to think of things no one else will think of, and was working on some snowflake stuff [yeah, right - no one will ever think of doing snowflakes for december events /sarcasm], and ran into issues.

See, I use Blender for modeling.  Its free, but more importantly for me, I've been working with it since 03 or 04? since I used it for Sims 2 modding.  So, I already know its quirks, or at least the ones that are going to effect modeling.  So, I'm very excited with all the features they have been adding in the last few years, except...

I'm still not really sure -how- to make what I see in a render -bake- that way.  And it isn't working that way, so wanted to take a break.  This is beyond the break I took because I share computer space with someone who works from home who was on a skype call with a boss - which means no video tutorials for me.  At least I got a marketpoop listing done.

So, off to take a break, and right now, break time means some World of Warcraft, which is very popular with the new expansion [even with the release day issues yesterday], and its down.  Considering the time this morning was 9 am PST, and its now 9 am SLT, I'm figuring that this means some play time.  Except right at 9, the message now reads that its extended, with no time given.  Joy.

The good news is, that since I haven't blogged this week, I can blog!  So I did.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Basics, since this isn't a fashiony sort of pose.  Elwood is wearing Avatar Bizarre stuff with a custom Frankenfaery skin from Atomic Faery, Sirius is wearing a First Act wolf avie and jeans, and I'm wearing some Facade Noir, :{MV}: and 8f8 along with my usual slink, magika and atomic faery stuff.  The pub we're in is Tempus Fugit's Rose and Thorn, which is decorated with a mix of Trompe Loeil, Faerycat Designs and 22769 stuffs. [not all of which is shown, but its there.]

Anyways - this rambling mess is brought to you by the letters W and R, and the number 3.

Coming in from the Cold

For once, this one isn't at all inspired by a song *gasp* (Amazing isn't it?), and considering that almost my entire life has had a internal soundtrack, it is fairly odd.  But, something else that has been a constant is books, and today A Tattered Page opens up at noon, and my personal blog reflects this.

Frankenstein has a lot of themes running through it.  I'm not joking, it does.  One of these is a desire of all things to belong, to not be left on the fringes of society.  And at some point the monster [who never does seem to have any name at all, contrary to pop culture], does some very fae type things for the people he is living near; providing extra firewood and such in the night.

And this got me to thinking; do the stories about the capricious behavior of the fae come from a desire to come in from the cold as well?  And feeling there is no place for them around our hearthfires, lead to them doing horrible things?
I'm not going to give away spoilers, if one could really give away spoilers on a book that has been out for just shy of 200 years [4 more years].  But I think if you read the book for yourself, you might see where I'm drawing the comparisons.  I think most folks, when left too long out in the cold, will lash out when kind deeds do not work.
This fae though?  This is her hearth, so no one is going to deny her the warmth of the fires.

Closing Time....?

This week there almost was not a blog post.  Its a challenge for me to write one every week because I really don't know what to say.  But I realized that I needed to push myself out of my shell even just a little, as hard as it is for me.  I've always been shy, afraid of being a bother, and inclined to react to others, but its gotten worse over the years, rather than better, as I didn't have classes or work to pull me out among others.

I want to go out there, be noticed, but it seems that even when I do step outside of my usual boundries that my first instinct is to be invisible.  I really don't know how not to be, and it frustrates me.  I've run a business in SL for 5 years now, and even most of my friends don't know what I make; I suspect many don't know I have a business at all.  I know I'm rubbish at this social thing, and I know it affects my abilities in marketing, which I dislike anyway.

But, its time for me to go and try to step into the world, I think.  Time to try and break past the obstacles that keep me from my dreams; many I put there myself.  Or as Semisonic put it,

Closing time
Time for you to go out go out into the world.
Time for me to just -do- things, instead of fretting over whether or not it will work out.

Sometimes, it takes some trial and error to find where you belong, no matter where you are.  And when friendships are involved it can and usually does get more complicated.  When I first came to SL, I was actively Roleplaying or RPing.  First one place, than another, until getting into running my first RP sim.  Technically, I wasn't supposed to run it OOCly.  Building is my strong suit, working with people, not so much.  I've never been good at shmoozing.  So it didn't last more than a month after opening, because the person who was going to handle all that stuff wasn't up to dealing with it.

After that, I looked a bit more, couldn't find a place that would allow my particular history and just threw myself into my shop, teaching and DJing, this year.  My business partner and one of my two best friends decided that instead of trying to continue with the radio station in The Secret World, that we'd try running a club in SL.  Meanwhile, there was a spate of posts where folks were losing their RP homes because of finances.  The two ideas; club and place for folks to continue to RP, combined into Tempus Fugit.  More importantly, it was designed so that you don't have to be an RPer.  So what if your some normal person ooc, while the neko next to you is from the far future, and the troll siting at the bar is from the past and sideways?  When the place is outside of time and space, anything really should be possible.

So what does this have to do with today's post?  A friend recently has been trying to get me to RP where she is an admin.  Okay, fine, I'll give it try.  But its hard for me to get integrated and I don't think I'll fit there.  I'll probably keep trying in my copious spare time (Ha!), but I'm not sure how well it will work.

Meanwhile, I've got the club to run.  This time the person who was suppose to handle all the schmoozing is really gone.  I've got to do it myself with remaining family.  And seriously?  If I need some place to roleplay?  I already have it; with elements of fantasy, sci fi, and things completely outside of time itself.

Time ...

So, I have been very lax the last month.  First there was a trip, and maybe another trip, and I forgot to get back on the horse.  The 4th was Beth's rez day.  She turned 5, but there is an older account which is actually 10 years old and nearing 11.  So, that made me think of a song that I rather love, by a band I rather love.  From there it was to other songs about time, which makes a certain amount of sense since I own a night club called Tempus Fugit.

Tempus Fugit means Time Flies, and the motto, logically, is 'Time flies when you're having fun."  Now, this isn't a blog post about the club, not really.  I'm very happy with the rebuild, and the 25 of October, we'll have a new grand opening [we never did before, so... yeah].  This time there will be gifts; a clock, and a personal copy of our dance star that floats around you, slowly changing colours and throwing off matching light [which you can turn off and on with a command].

Instead, its about sorrow, and joy, and stubborn determination.  Its about how time flies, often leaving us to wonder where it went, and what we did while dragged along in its wake.  For Beth, its only been five years, but...

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
[Pink Floyd - Time]

As for why I've practically become Super Deformed?  When I first started Beth, she became an RP character [initially she was a blog alt].  Then within a year, all the places she'd played were gone and I'd not found another.  Now, she's being played again.  Sometimes you just need to grab the RP when you can.

And if you do want some place mellow to come and hang out, or a place to come roleplay with others?  Tempus Fugit is open and ready, even if its not officially yet.

Down on the Bayou

As you might have guessed by now, music is a big part of my thinking.  So, this month, I'm in two events.  One is [Genre], which has a petite thing going on this round, and the other is The Fantasy Collective, where the theme is Bayous.

Now, this was an interesting theme, considering that the past year has seen me relocate to this little town right near the Florida-Alabama border. Like New Orleans, we have some of the same architecture, and Mardi Gras is a fairly big deal here too.  And like New Orleans, we too have bayous, in fact I don't live too far from one.

So, for today's blogpost, I decided to go with something to sort of show the two themes, both of which events have some awesomely cool things, so check it out!

------------------------------

The picture above, well, I'm really happy with how those wings came out.  They are flexi, but with materials, you can get some lovely affects, and they are so shimmery that I might be wearing them for a while.  I don't usually brag at all on my own stuff, but, I adore these.

And even nature faeries, bayou dwelling or otherwise, need a nice roof over their head.  This is my current home, until I go and decide to redo it all again.  The best thing about virtual worlds, it is much easier to redo your entire home at a whim.  If only it was so easy in the real world.

PS - I won't be in a position to do a blog post next week, since I'll be on my laptop.  I mean, I could, but the images would be horrible.  Also, next month is A Clockwork Spiral, so expect a bit more steampunk type stuff in the next few weeks as we get closer.

Time Flies ...

 Tempus Fugit

Somewhere between the center of the universe and the space outside of it and sometime from the moments before time even started and the last tick of the clock, there is a place that for untold ages had been lost to everyone, a myth among the arcane and the learned.  A singular place where all universes touch and all timelines weave, this scant piece of rock in the maelstrom of Everything That Was and Nothing That Shall Be started off as nothing more than that: a floating rock in a fortuitous location.  Eventually, though, as with all secrets, this slice of impossibility was discovered.

The explorers who found it debated what would best be done with a place that connected to everywhere and everywhen.  After much scholarly debate and impassioned arguments, one choice became the victor.  The best thing to do with this infinite place was to build a nightclub.  Why, you might ask?  What could such learned and brave people be thinking?

Those storied adventurers wanted peace.  They wanted a good time, not just for themselves, but for everyone.  If they established a fort there, it would have been the launching port or the ultimate prize of wars the like the multiverse had ever seen.  If they had established as a port of call, again, billions of lives would have been wasted fighting for it.  Instead, it would be a safe haven, a place for anyone from anywhen to hang their hat (or respective article of clothing) and find a respite from whatever storms plagued them back home.  To secure their prize, the explorers harnessed the endless calamity all around them, letting those with the secret knowledge open holes in reality, lock them tight, and banish any traveller back from where they came.

Needless to say, that power proved effective.  Though created in peace, Tempus Fugit has been an object of desire for many over the countless centuries, but those days have faded.  Those who tried such a feat were erased from history, caught in endless time streams and dimensional holes.  In time, wisdom prevailed over most who knew of the place and it's neutrality universally accepted.

If you're a weary adventurer wandering the multiverse, a haggard time traveler who just needs good drink and good music, or just someone who needs it, you will undoubtedly find yourself here eventually.  Welcome and enjoy, stranger!

------------------------------------

Tempus Fugit is a combination of assorted themed rooms for music, dancing, conversation, drinking and even just putting up your feet for a spell and relaxing.  It is an RP-focused venue, but all are welcome, In Character or Out.  You can subscribe to the Club subscriber for updated information, or keep an eye on the event calender, but the subscriber group is the best way to learn of anything impromptu.

So, somehow I ended up running a club.  It wasn't the original plan; I'm more the creative type, and Tesla Tempest was more the people person.  Tesla wanted to try doing a club, and we did a fair amount of arguing over things, I didn't think SL needed yet another dance club, for example, and I wanted to keep away from things like the shoutcast boards or contest boards and the like.  We managed to compromise, but then in May Tesla's player passed away.

Tempus Fugit started off life originally as a steampunk/fantasy club on the now defunct Gossamer Gaslight rp sim.  It got resurrected for this project because, well, for a chunk of space outside of time, it seemed a good name.  The outside, the disco-y area and the garden still use Tesla's textured, and I tried to stick to plan on finishing the rest of it up.

So, let's start the tour, shall we?  The first image is right outside of the building.  A chunk of the first floor houses Atomic Faery; when we lost Tesla, I had to par down some of the expenses, and our landlord was really nice about letting me use a bit of the space for this.  But this isn't about the store, so no pics.

To the left, is the entrance to the club and the pub area.  Originally intended mostly for hanging out, there is a bar and comfortable furniture clumps.  But there is also a rug and a dance star, since it's also a good spot for doing jazz type shows and that's danceable stuff.

This is also where I should tell you about the teleport circles.  These things are how you get around.  A tip clock is on the wall above all but the shop one, so if nothing else, it should help spot them.

You can be surprised that the place doesn't have more purple, if you'd like.  But somehow, even though it was Tesla's favorite colour, blue ended up the predominant one.  Not sure why, it actually wasn't something I argued on, promise.

Next is the Dance Club area.  Technically, the dance club is only about half of the second floor space, the other half is the monolith themed metal-punk-goth area.  See, the different areas are also supposed to be sort of time themed too.  The Dance club is sort of tech-sci fi, for example, the pub is supposed to be kind of steampunkish, and the third area is supposed to be more primal feeling.

Bird's eye view [get it?] of the dance floor.  The dark squares light up as you walk across the surface, and we made a -lot- of use of emissive masking, as well as other materials.  Eventually we'll add more furniture around the edge, but still trying to find the right pieces.

And yes, there is a throne; the primary metal DJ, since I tend to bounce all over the place musically, specifically asked for a throne.  And I really liked it when I saw it, so I nabbed it.

A little side room with a more gothic feel, and actual places to sit down, again, the main area might get some more furniture eventually, but it has to be the right sort of thing.  A surpringly few creators seem to make massive stone furniture for this sort of thing.

Anyway, after all the showing around and stuff, time to rest up in the garden.  Somehow I managed to miss getting a single picture of any of the dance stars, but they really are worth seeing, and like much of the place, I don't think that the photos capture it well.  Materials and ever changing lighting and such really do look better in person.

----------------------------------

Tempus Fugit is open, and will be having our first event go live sometime in October, if all goes well.  This event will be a game, a mystery, and an insight into the IC history/story around the club and how it came to be.

Also, people are welcome to come and roleplay when there isn't a live show, or if they want to take some pictures themselves.  The only OOC rules are don't be an asshole.  The IC rules are even simpler - as long as you don't annoy the powers that be [and we're fairly hard to annoy] you're fine.

The club is possible in large part by Dysfunctional Designs, Trompe Loleil, Kalopsia, Cerridwen's Cauldron, Studio Skye, and of course the Tempus Fugit build team [Tesla Tempus and myself]. [Again, I hope I didn't miss anyone on this list either.]

A big thanks also to the helpful scripty types over on Second Life Universe, who helped me make the dance floor work.

New Beginnings - Roses

To say I'm heavily affected by music, any music, is an understatement.  Lyrics, melodies, even all the little counterpoints and such, constantly play through my head.  When I was very young, I even tried my hand at writing them down, but alas my ability to name things is a bit lacking.  My mother saw 'Homemade Melody' (I was 10 maybe?) and read it as 'Home on the Range'.  Without actually reading the music she jumped to a conclusion that kept me from doing more than write down lyrics since then.  But the love of music is still there, and at least I do understand plagiarism.

And lately, even more than usual for me, its been very hard to keep myself going.  To keep trying to pick myself up and dust myself off, to keep following my dreams, or maybe even pick back up on following them.

So how does this relate to this post?  Well, not only is there this song that I find really inspirational and sort of speaks for me, to me, however you want to put it, but it also goes around my favorite flower.  You know, the ones all over these images.  That I ran across the song is sheer chance, and happened when I really did need it most, with the death of one of my two best friends ever, and business partner in SL on May 15th.

I DJ, you see, among other things.  And when someone requests songs, I'll do my best to find them, and if they are good, I'll grab the album too.  And in this case, it was well worth it, but we'll not digress this post.  Its a Finnish band called Poets of the Fall, and I didn't actually decide to listen to the rest of the album until may, when I heard this song called 'Roses'.  The chorus is what I'll quote here.

         "So when I'm crying alone
Yeah, when I'm cold as a dying stone

Grow me a garden of roses
Paint me the colors of sky and rain
Teach me to speak with their voices
Show me the way and I'll try again."
